Studies show that music becomes popular when big $$$ shoves it in your face 24/7 on television, in the stores, and buzz develops reinforced by peer pressure. This is sad but true. There are bands however, like Fugazi, and indie artists, like Jonathan Coulton, that have found ways to go against the flow of commercialism and succeed. I aim to join them.
Here's what happens when you buy a download. Aside from all the whooping and hollaring, I feel very grateful that someone else out there is setting me free. Right now, I am chained to a day job that sucks away huge amounts of free time leaving me with very little recording time (hence the current small amount of songs available). Now if only 10,000 people were to buy just one download then that would be enough for me to take some time off and record some more songs. Pass a certain threshold of downloads and your efforts will set me 100% free. The music would undergo a dramatic improvement I'm sure and then society at large would benefit from a larger pool of kick-ass songs. Eventually, my swollen ego would no doubt produce a bloated-head superstar that society could then turn on, stabbing me in the back as I downward spiral into yet another VH1 has-been. Maybe a spot on one of those celebrity addict reality shows with Dr. Drew. Here today. Gone tomorrow. What fun!
